Phytolacca americana

Commonly called Poke 'round these parts, this plant is BIG medicine. The berries and the root. I hope you can see the root communicating this fact in this photo.

If you still have any doubt about what BIG medicine this plant holds, or the respect that it deserves, go harvest a root.

LOL. That poor man. You made him wrestle the Poke Root from the ground. I thought that was what you had apprentice hours for. >wink<

I made him *nothing* - his free will guided him to dig ... I just guided him to the place! :D

Funny thing ... my apprentices all disappear in root-digging season ...

That is HUGE all right! I can only imagine what it is like digging it up.

I'm inclined to add that the nice thing about digging Poke is that the roots spread out and are closer to the surface, making them simpler - MUCH simpler - to harvest than ... say ... burdock!

Or even horseradish.

But - especially burdock!

I didn't disappear when it was burdock digging time - must count for something. Looks like the boy cut his long locks. I have poke poking through the lattice on my deck. I can't get to the roots. I LOL at its determined nature to keep growing and poking its way through.

This really wasn't that bad to dig. The burdock, on the other hand ...
